Surat Vadnagara Nagar brahmins has reach history. It will be worth to look back and have idea of our heritage. This is effort to make presentation of what is available. I request others to contribute from them what ever is available.
EMINENT NAGAR BRAHMINS S OF
(Period Since 1950 Till Date )
A booklet containing names of Eminent Nagar Brahmins of Surat was first published in 1958 by our Respected Elder, Rao Bahadur Chandravidynand Pandyaji. Now that almost 50 years have passed since then, it is high time that another second part of this book having names of Eminent Surat Nagar Brahmins since 1958 is prepared and published.
There has been vast development since 1958 and the Nagar Brahmins of Surat have excelled in many fields, several of them were not considered in 1958 probably as there was none who could be included therein at that time, besides that booklet contained names of only those who had expired before 1958. For preparing such a book now certain criteria is required to be defined so that the list of probable persons to be included does not become unnecessarily too long.
Following criteria is proposed by me at present. However I am open to examine and consider suitable suggestions. This criterion has to be finalised in such a way that it does not become unmanageable to compile data and prepare the book but also avoid heartburning to a few aspirants whose names are not included.
This book will contain names of persons that are not included in the earlier booklet of 1958. Those already included in 1958 booklet will not be considered for inclusion again. The criteria as under is now is now prepared for considering the names.
1.0 Those, who have expired but have made some contribution or name can be included in the list irrespective of their age at the time of their death.
2.0 Those, who are alive and are senior citizens having reached the age of 60 years only would be considered. Those who are younger still have the opportunity to get their names included in the third such book which can be prepared and published after about 10-15 years.
3.0 Who have made excellent contributions to the Nagar community.
4.0 Who have made some contribution to the society in general,
5.0 Who have gained some prominence and made name in
6.0 Who have achieved some status which others cannot so easily achieve.
7.0 Who have reached some positions or done some contributions in fields of Religion, Education, Business, Literature, Academics, Medicine, Engineering, other Specialisation, Adventure, Research, Social Activities, Art, Music, Administration and similar other fields by which the Nagar Community of Surat can take pride.

Biography
Narmad was born in Surat on August 24, 1833. He introduced many creative forms of writing in Gujarati. He wrote pioneering work in such forms as autobiography, poetry, lexicography, historical plays and research in folk literature. He was also an outspoken journalist and a pamphleteer. Narmad was a strong opponent of religious fanaticism and orthodoxy. He promoted nationalism and patriotism, wrote about self-government and talked about one national language, Hindi, for all of India, nearly five decades before Mohandas Gandhi or Nehru. He wrote a poem Jai Jai Garavi Gujarat in which he listed with a sense of pride all the cultural symbols that go into constituting the Gujarat identity. These symbols include even the things non-Hindu, implying that Gujarat belongs to all the castes, communities, races, religions and sects that inhabit Gujarat. It was this devout poet whose debt Gandhi acknowledged for his philosophy of non-violence. With the help of some friends, Narmad published a newsletter called Daandiyo, modeled after The Spectator, a weekly British magazine. He died of Arthritis on February 26, 1886.
There is a huge library namely "Narmad Central Library" managed by Surat Municipal Corporation located at Ghod-Dod Road & Athwalines Main Road Junction, Near Umra Police Station having more than 1,50,00 books and 35,000 members.
Honors
In 2005, the name of South Gujarat University was changed to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University by the Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.
